Catching up!

I think of this blog as a way to remind us to eat more balanced meals and learn how to cook new things! So, what kinds of healthy and balanced thigns have we been eating lately?

Clockwise from 9 o'clock: Menchi Katsu, White Rice w/ seaweed flakes, Tomato slice, Sesame soy sauce and sesame oil spinach, Fish cake stuffed with chinese marinated peanut, boiled egg.
Garnish: Mustard (on fishcake) and Nitrate Free Smoked Ham
Not shown: Kewpie Mayonaise for menchi katsu, watermelon for dessert

Recipe for Menchi Katsu:
4 hamburger patties
2 slices of bread
1/2 cup frozen corn
1/2 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup chopped onions
1/8 cup milk
a squirt of ketchup
1/8 cup tonkatsu sauce
1 egg
panko flakes for breading
oil for deep frying

In a large mixing bowl, break the bread into little pieces (i used the two ends, since ends make bad sandwiches!)
Add milk, tonkatsu sauce, ketchup, egg and mix
Add hamburger, corn, peas, onion and mix
Shape into patties
Bread patties w/ panko flakes
Deep Fry until done (how long depends how thick your patties are; I made patties abt 3/4 inch thick and fried them a bit over a minute on each side)

Notes for next time:
Wasn't enough panko flakes: next time will try egg > flour > egg > panko
Onions were not done enough: next time will fry the onions a bit before mixing w/ beef
Takes forever to fry: next time will try "shallow-frying" in our big pan instead of wok

Healthy? About 50% vegetable (corn, onion, peas) so not bad, but deep fried.

Ratings:
Ostrich: Delicious!
Tiger: pending
Teerex: so-so, onions were too spicy!

Testing

Oh no! What is happening to Pac-Man? He's being assaulted by evil sausage-squids in the Ocean of Curry. Finish your corn and run, Pac-Man! Run!! ... ... No, nobody eats corn that way.

An early attempt at a themed lunch by Ostwige. Boiled sausages, frozen corn-on-the-cob, frozen potato cutlets, fried egg, yellow pickle slice, plain curry, and of course our "guest" Pac-Man.

Stay tuned for a post from our other site contributor, BB!
